Mechanic

Department: Union-Distribution

Job Summary:

In coordination with the Master Mechanic, this position is responsible for the general maintenance and repair of Company vehicles, heavy and light equipment.

Essential Functions:

Fleet Maintenance

Repairs and maintains all company vehicles, including heavy equipment, to ensure that vehicles and equipment are maintained is safe working order.

  • Develops, implements and maintains preventative maintenance programs for all vehicles and equipment.
  • Repairs, replaces and adjusts brake systems, hydraulic and air.
  • Repairs ignition system, fuel systems and electrical systems as required.
  • Repairs or replaces shock absorbers.
  • Installs and repairs accessories such as radios, HVAC systems, mirrors, and windshield wipers.
  • Repairs and services cooling systems as required.
  • Replaces and adjusts headlights.
  • Examines vehicles and provides managers with written assessment of damage or malfunction as necessary.
  • Performs minor body repairs.
  • Regularly performs preventative maintenance services.
  • Maintains and repairs small equipment including pumps, pipe saws, generators, trailer mounted power units, road saws, and chain saws.
  • Performs maintenance and service of heavy equipment.
  • Performs welding on equipment as needed.
  • Completes state safety & emission inspection on all Company vehicles and trailers in compliance with NH state law.
  • Maintains schedules and records on repairs and maintenance of vehicles and equipment. Keeps Master mechanic and managers informed of status of vehicles.

Technical Support

Trains, coordinates, and monitors the work of other employees assigned to the repair and maintenance of all assigned vehicles and equipment.

  • Advises maintenance staff in complex repair situations.
  • Demonstrates proper safety methods and practices. Oversees operations to ensure adherence to all guidelines.
  • Maintains current on the principles, practices and new developments in fleet maintenance.
    • Attend meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions.
    • Reviews publications and audio visual materials.

Vehicle and Equipment Readiness

Ensure that assigned vehicle, equipment and inventory are maintained at a level ready to perform assigned tasks.

  • Check vehicles to ensure that gas, oil and tire pressure levels are sufficient. Refuel or replenish as necessary. Complete daily prechecks as necessary. Refer problems to mechanic.
  • Performs mechanical repairs in the field if required
  • Performs daily maintenance tasks, such as lubing, and securing of appurtenance on heavy equipment, and equipment used to transport heavy equipment.

Inventory

  • Participate in inventory counts as required or requested.
  • Document all inventory used during work assignments on a daily basis

General Administrative Requirements

Accurately and fully complete and return all administrative reports on a timely basis. This includes timesheets, work orders, service records, and inspection reports.

Additional Duties:

General Maintenance

Perform a variety of general maintenance duties to support the efficient operation of the Company. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Clean and organize vehicle maintenance shop and garage.
  • Operate backhoe and fork truck for unloading fittings.
  • Shovel and plow snow at company facilities.
  • Perform minor building maintenance.
  • Wash and wax vehicle’s exterior. Clean interior as needed.

Other duties as requested or requested.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of

  • Theory and complexities of automotive technology, care and operation of internal

combustion engines as well as electric hybrids, current repair methods, materials and tools;

  • Knowledge of Hydraulic power systems, including pumps, valves cylinder and propulsion systems.
  • All aspects of metal fabrication & welding; methods and practices followed in the maintenance of tools, machinery, and equipment;
  • Safety precautions to be observed in the maintenance and installation of electronic and mechanical equipment.
  • Common tools, materials, equipment and vehicles used in the maintenance and repair of a water distribution system.
  • Knowledge of equipment, tools, mechanical devices, and their uses to produce motion, light, Perform semi-skilled maintenance duties.
  • Basic mathematical principles.

Ability to

  • Communicate clearly, concisely and courteously, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ensure work is in compliance with safety and work practices. Notify appropriate manager if aware of non-compliance.
  • Work safely with the variety of tools related to water system maintenance.
  • Work from plans and specifications;
  • Understand oral and written instructions.
  • Operate laptop or tablet.
  • Respond promptly to off hour emergency requests as needed for duties in which employee is qualified
  • Work overtime as required
  • Perform heavy labor.
  • Perform semi-skilled maintenance duties.
  • Perform complex diagnostic procedures on all vehicle systems; determine appropriate maintenance and repairs;
  • Effectively use hand tools and automotive diagnostic equipment;
  • Interpret manufacturers ‘specifications;
  • enerate and maintain government-mandated computer records and files;
  • Weld using mig, tig, stick and gas;
  • Inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable safety codes and regulations;
  • Train and direct the work of other staff in the area;

Education and Experience

Position levels are determined by certification, experience and collective bargaining contract.

Mechanic

  • One to three years of experience, three to five preferred. – (Note: certifications listed below are required
  • Deemed to be fully qualified by means of training and experience; and thorough knowledge of the all aspects of the Mechanic duties.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements

  • NH DMV State Inspection Certificate preferred
  • Valid US Issued CDL-B license in good standing preferred; CDL-A preferred
  • First Aid Training
  • OSHA 10 Hour Safety Card
